The Vacancy

Are you passionate about helping people move forward with their mental health and wellbeing?

Can you build strong relationships rooted in empathy, trust, and lived experience?

Do you want to work in a service focused on connection, equity, and recovery?

If so, you could be the person we are looking for.

Second Step is a leading mental health charity supporting people across Bristol and the Southwest. We provide innovative, trauma-informed support to people experiencing complex needs, including mental health difficulties, homelessness, substance misuse and contact with the criminal justice system. Our services are built around recovery, choice and co-production, putting people at the heart of everything we do.

About the Service
As part of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Partnership in Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW), Second Step delivers community mental health support in collaboration with Alabaré, Missing Link and Nilaari. Together, we’re transforming mental health services by focusing on trauma-informed, person-centred, and culturally inclusive approaches.

The Assistant Recovery Navigator role offers either a traditional or peer-based approach, where individuals with lived experience of mental health can provide powerful, hope-inspiring support as part of their role.

About You
As an Assistant Recovery Navigator, you’ll work closely with individuals with moderate to severe mental health needs, helping them achieve personal recovery goals and connect to meaningful support within their community under the guidance of Recovery Navigators. You’ll collaborate with health professionals, VCSE partners, and other support networks to provide a seamless experience.

You will:
  • Identify opportunities to build community connections and social networks, supporting attendance by reducing barriers to access community groups
  • Practicing self-management strategies by working alongside clients to instil motivation and confidence, promoting sustained change
  • Use your own lived experience (if applicable) to provide hope and connection.
  • Supporting clients to complete tasks identified through goals that support holistic wellbeing and improve life satisfaction
  • Maintain hope and optimism for the individual with high aspirations for recovery, advocating for them where appropriate
  • Maintain accurate and timely casework, note-taking, and outcome monitoring.
  • Support the implementation of client-led safety plans jointly with the Senior Recovery Navigator
  • Promote recovery, inclusion, and equity in everything you do.
You’ll need:
  • Experience working with vulnerable people either in a paid or voluntary capacity
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage caseloads, work flexibly, and build effective multi-agency partnerships.
  • Confidence in IT systems and record-keeping.
  • A deep understanding of recovery and trauma-informed practice.
  • If applying as a Peer Assistant Recovery Navigator, an ability to draw from your own recovery journey in a safe and supportive way.

About us
We are taking positive action to increase diversity throughout our organisation, and to nurture a culture of inclusion for all our people and the clients that we support.

We welcome applications from everyone who meets the criteria and strongly encourage individuals who identify as being of Black, African, Caribbean or Asian descent to apply as these groups are currently under-represented at Second Step.

To ensure fairness and consistency, all applications are anonymised up until an interview has been confirmed so that shortlisting is based solely upon the suitability of the candidate’s skills and qualities.

Second Step offers an excellent annual leave package, access to our Employee Assistance Programme, a strong culture of support and inclusion, and a full induction programme with ongoing training opportunities.

So…if you think this describes you, what are you waiting for?
